Allergy Drops Treatment

Allergy Drops Treatment in Foley, AL

A Needle-Free Allergy Management Option for Select Patients

Common allergy symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, breathing difficulties, itchy or watery eyes, and headaches can interfere with daily comfort, sleep quality, productivity, and overall well-being.

While medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, nasal sprays, and other allergy medications may help manage symptoms for some patients, others may continue to experience ongoing allergy concerns despite these measures.

At ENT Centers of Excellence, we offer allergy drops as a needle-free immunotherapy option for appropriate candidates. Allergy drops may help reduce sensitivity to certain allergens over time in some patients.

What Are Allergy Drops?

Allergy drops are a form of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) designed to expose the immune system to small amounts of allergens over time under medical supervision.

During treatment, allergen extracts are placed under the tongue on a daily basis. Unlike allergy shots, allergy drops do not require injections and may be administered at home under physician guidance after the initial monitored dose.

Your ENT physician will discuss available allergy treatment options and determine whether allergy drops may be appropriate based on your symptoms, allergy profile, medical history, and treatment goals.

Important Information About FDA Approval

Certain SLIT tablets are FDA-approved for specific allergens, including some pollen allergies.

Custom-compounded allergy drops are not currently FDA-approved in the United States and may be prescribed off-label under physician supervision when clinically appropriate.

Your physician will discuss the potential risks, benefits, alternatives, and limitations of treatment before starting therapy.

What Can Allergy Drops Help Treat?

Allergy drops may be considered for certain environmental allergies, including:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Mold spores

Not all patients with allergies are candidates for allergy drops treatment. A comprehensive allergy evaluation can help determine whether this approach may be appropriate for your condition and symptoms.

Individual experiences and treatment outcomes vary by patient.

Potential Benefits of Allergy Drops

Potential benefits of allergy drops may include:

  • Needle-free allergy immunotherapy
  • At-home administration after the initial supervised dose
  • Flexible treatment scheduling for some patients
  • Gradual reduction in sensitivity to certain allergens in some individuals over time
  • Ability to include multiple allergens in a customized treatment formulation when clinically appropriate

Are Allergy Drops Safe?

As with any medical treatment, allergy drops carry potential risks and side effects, and treatment suitability varies by patient.

Some patients may experience:

  • Mild mouth or throat irritation
  • Temporary increase in allergy symptoms during treatment adjustment
  • Rare but serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis

To help support patient safety, your ENT provider may:

  • Administer the first dose in the office under observation
  • Review potential risks, benefits, and treatment expectations
  • Discuss whether carrying epinephrine (EpiPen®) may be recommended during treatment
