Nasal Polyps in Foley, AL

Nasal Polyps in Foley, AL

Understanding Chronic Nasal Congestion and Sinus Inflammation

Persistent nasal congestion, reduced sense of smell, postnasal drip, or recurring sinus infections may sometimes be associated with nasal polyps. These soft tissue growths can develop gradually within the nasal passages or sinuses and may contribute to ongoing airflow obstruction and sinus symptoms.

At ENT Centers of Excellence in Foley, AL, we evaluate nasal polyps as part of a comprehensive nasal and sinus examination to help determine whether they may be contributing to your symptoms and what treatment options may be appropriate.

Talk to Us About Your Nasal Symptoms

What Are Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that develop along the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses.

They are commonly associated with chronic inflammation within the nasal and sinus tissues and may vary in size and number. Smaller polyps may not cause noticeable symptoms, while larger or multiple polyps can contribute to nasal blockage and drainage issues.

Nasal polyps are not tumors or cancerous growths.

What Causes Nasal Polyps?

Nasal polyps are commonly associated with chronic inflammation affecting the nose and sinuses.

Conditions that may contribute to polyp formation include:

  • Allergies or chronic allergic inflammation
  • Asthma
  • Chronic sinus infections or chronic sinusitis
  • Sensitivity to certain medications, including aspirin
  • Certain inflammatory or immune-related conditions, such as cystic fibrosis or eosinophilic disorders

Polyps often develop gradually over time as part of an ongoing inflammatory process.

Symptoms Associated With Nasal Polyps

Symptoms may vary depending on the size and location of the polyps and whether additional sinus inflammation is present.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion
  • Reduced or altered sense of smell or taste
  • Runny nose or postnasal drainage
  • Facial pressure or fullness
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Recurring sinus infections

These symptoms may overlap with allergies, chronic sinusitis, or other nasal conditions, which is why a comprehensive ENT evaluation is important.

How Are Nasal Polyps Evaluated?

Evaluation typically begins with a review of symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination of the nasal passages.

Your ENT provider may also recommend:

  • Nasal endoscopy to obtain a more detailed view of the nasal passages and sinuses
  • Imaging studies, such as CT scans, when additional evaluation of the sinuses is needed

This evaluation helps determine whether nasal polyps may be contributing to symptoms and guides treatment recommendations.

Treatment Options for Nasal Polyps

Treatment recommendations depend on symptom severity, degree of obstruction, and the extent of underlying inflammation.

Management options may include:

  • Nasal steroid sprays
  • Saline nasal rinses
  • Other anti-inflammatory medications when clinically appropriate
  • Treatment of contributing allergy or sinus conditions

For patients with larger polyps or persistent symptoms despite medical management, procedural or surgical treatment options may also be considered.

Your ENT provider will discuss treatment recommendations based on your symptoms, examination findings, and medical history.

What Is SINUVA®?

SINUVA® is an FDA-approved sinus implant for certain adult patients with recurrent nasal polyps who have previously undergone ethmoid sinus surgery.

The implant is designed to deliver mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid medication, directly into the sinus cavity over time. It is placed in-office by a healthcare provider and gradually expands within the ethmoid sinus area.

Some clinical studies have shown that SINUVA® may help reduce nasal obstruction and polyp size in select patients following prior sinus surgery.

Individual results vary, and not all patients are candidates. Your provider will determine whether SINUVA® may be appropriate based on your symptoms, anatomy, treatment history, and examination findings.

As with any medical treatment or implant, risks and potential complications are possible and will be reviewed during consultation.
