Sinusitis / Chronic Sinusitis

Is a very common sickness that happens when the tissue lining in the sinus gets inflamed. Typically, a healthy sinus is filled with air, but it can become infected when it gets blocked with fluid. A few conditions that can cause sinus blockage are a common cold, allergies, nasal polyps, or a deviated septum. The different types of sinusitis are acute sinusitis which commonly starts as a cold and can last for about 2 to 4 weeks. Subacute sinusitis can usually last for 4 to 12 weeks, Chronic sinusitis symptoms last over 12 weeks, and recurrent sinusitis happens several times a year. Over 35 million Americans have sinusitis at least one time each year.

Nasal Obstruction

Anything that restricts airflow going in or out of one or both nasal passages. Usually, the cause of nasal obstructions is the swelling of the nasal tissue or an anatomical blockage. Both of these things cause the nasal cavity to narrow and cause the feeling of passages being congested. A few symptoms of nasal obstruction are a “nasally” voice, breathing through the mouth most of the time, recurrent sinus infections, nasal drainage.

Chronic Snoring

Snoring, as we all know it, is a harsh sound that can occur when someone is sleeping. What causes the noise is when air flows past relaxed tissues in the throat that causes the tissues to vibrate with every breath. There are lifestyle changes such as avoiding alcohol close to bedtime, losing weight, or sleeping on your side that can help to stop snoring. Some medical devices and surgeries can be performed if a doctor sees fit. However, these are not suitable for everyone who snores.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea, also known as OSA, is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder. It occurs when the throat muscles intermittently relax and block your airway during sleep and can cause you to stop and start breathing repeatedly while you sleep. The most noticeable sign is snoring. Other symptoms can include: excessive daytime sleepiness, abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking, waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat, observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep, morning headaches, or high blood pressure. Contact ENT Center of Excellence if your snoring is loud enough to disturb you or your partners sleep, you wake up gasping or choking, there are pauses in your breathing while you sleep, or if you have excessive daytime tiredness, which could cause you to fall asleep while driving, watching TV or working. Our doctors can provide several treatment options if you or a loved one suffers from OSA.

Goiter

A goiter is an abnormal enlargement in your thyroid gland. Most of the time, goiters are painless, but they can commonly cause a cough and make it harder for you to breathe or swallow. The causes of goiters typically come from a lack of iodine in the diet but can often be because of the over or underproduction of thyroid hormones. Treatments for goiters depend on the size, symptoms, the cause, and what your doctor thinks is best. Some signs and symptoms of goiters may include: swelling at the base of the neck, a tight feeling in your throat, coughing, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Hurthle Cell Cancer

Hurthle Cell Cancer is rare cancer that affects the thyroid gland. This type of cancer is one of several kinds of cancer that affects the thyroid. Because it is so rare, Hurthle Cell Cancer can be more aggressive than other kinds of thyroid cancers. The most common treatment is to remove it unless instructed otherwise by the doctor. There are not always symptoms associated with Hurthle Cell Cancer and are sometimes detected during a physical examination or imaging test. Some signs and symptoms include a lump in the neck, just below the adam’s apple, pain in your throat or neck, hoarseness or other changes in your voice, shortness of breath, or difficulty swallowing. However, having these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you have Hurthle Cell Cancer.
